A horrific accident killed Aiden Keefe, a 17-year-old senior at Noble High School, after his pickup truck struck an Amtrak Downeaster passenger train on Thursday afternoon in North Berwick, ME.

Noble High Pays Tribute to Football Star Aiden Keefe After Sudden Death

Noble High Senior and Football Star Aiden Keefe, 17, passes away.

According to authorities, Keefe was driving solo in a white pickup when the accident happened near the intersection of Elm Street (Route 4) and Buffum Road about 2:30 p.m. According North Berwick Police Chief Stephen Peasley, Keefe was apparently turning right onto Elm Street from Buffum Road at the time the car hit the train at a diagonal intersection. At the collision, Peasley verified that the crossing gates were working as they should.

First responders declared Keefe dead at the location. The train headed from Brunswick to Boston had no crew or passengers hurt.

The loss has greatly affected the Noble High School community. Principal A.J. Dufort wrote parents a letter declaring Keefe to be a "valued member" of the school and alerting them that counselors would be present to children on Friday. Friends and coworkers remembered him as courteous, humorous, and diligent; his former employer at Riverside Farm Stand complimented his devotion.

Playing as a wide receiver and returner for Noble's football team, Keefe was also a great athlete. Recognized last autumn as one of three receivers chosen to the Class A South All‑Conference First Team, he is proof of his ability and dedication on the field.

Following the disaster, a Meal Train has been set up to help Keefe's family by providing meals and support as they deal with the abrupt death.

State and local authorities are still looking into the accident's cause.
