Early studies indicate Billy had been embroiled in an argument in the parking area of the Cypress Pointe Apartment Complex, directly across from the store on 25 Knight Boxx Road. That day he was cut many times.

Billy drove himself to the Winn-Dixie ostensibly seeking help despite his severe injuries. A bystander found him and contacted 911. Deputies arrived swiftly and the Clay County Fire Rescue provided emergency medical care. Billy was taken to a local hospital, where he eventually perished from his injuries. It is believed that the individual who made the 911 call played no role in the incident.
