Who Was Deven? Amarillo Police Withhold Full Identity of Second Westminster Apartments Victim
Deven named second victim killed in Sunday shooting at Westminster Apartments in Amarillo with Ezekiel Almazan; eight others hurt, police investigate
Amarillo police have identified the second victim killed in Sunday's deadly mass shooting at the Westminster Apartments as Deven, a young man whose full identity has not yet been publicly released pending family notification. He died alongside 23-year-old Ezekiel Rudy Almazan in a sudden burst of gunfire that erupted around 2:00 a.m., leaving a west Amarillo community heartbroken, angry, and desperately searching for answers about the senseless violence.
The shooting unfolded at the large apartment complex located at 2415 Coulter Street near Westgate Parkway, where officers responding to multiple frantic reports of gunfire discovered a chaotic and devastating scene with numerous victims. One person, later confirmed as Almazan, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Deven was rushed to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries despite intensive emergency medical efforts.
In total, nine people were transported to area hospitals, with at least five initially listed in critical condition and fighting for their lives. The sheer number of wounded overwhelmed emergency crews in the early morning darkness, as paramedics worked urgently to triage patients and investigators began the painstaking, methodical work of securing evidence across the sprawling residential property.
Authorities believe the violence stemmed from an earlier social gathering involving juveniles and young adults. The group had been attending a party at a different location before moving to the Westminster Apartments to continue the night. Several individuals who had been asked to leave the original party allegedly followed the group to the complex with hostile intentions.
Upon arrival at the apartments, those individuals reportedly attempted to force their way into a specific apartment unit. When confronted by occupants, they allegedly opened fire with what police described as a rifle-style weapon, unleashing a sustained, terrifying barrage that residents likened to machine-gun fire echoing through the neighborhood and waking people several blocks away.
While Ezekiel Almazan has been publicly identified by grieving family and friends, Deven remains known to the wider public by his first name only as officials work carefully to notify next of kin and respect family privacy during this painful time. Both young men are now at the center of growing memorials, with heartfelt tributes pouring in across social media from friends mourning lives cut tragically short.
No arrests have been announced, and police have not released suspect descriptions as the complex investigation remains very active and ongoing. Detectives continue to interview numerous witnesses, collect surveillance video from the complex, and analyze ballistic evidence, urging anyone with information to come forward immediately to help bring justice and accountability for the deaths of Deven and Almazan.
The shooting comes less than six weeks after a violent and deadly day on March 22 when six people were killed and ten injured in four separate shootings across Amarillo. The back-to-back tragedies have intensified deep community concerns about gun violence, youth involvement, and public safety, as residents mourn Deven and Ezekiel while praying fervently for the full recovery of the eight very brave survivors still hospitalized today now.
