Columbia city and the University of South Carolina community are grieving the horrible death of Eliana M. Ellie Peterson of Columbia, who body was discovered Tuesday at the 650 Lincoln student housing complex in the 600 block of Lincoln Street.

Ellie, a first-year chemistry student from Sumter, South Carolina, was studying at USC. According Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford, she was determined to be deceased at the scene. Under supervision of the USC Police Department, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) continues investigating the events around her death.
Officials at the university have stated there is no danger to campus; USC's Student Affairs staff is offering counseling and support to students, staff, and faculty affected by this tragedy.
