According to investigators, the chain of events began Thursday night when officers with the Danville Police Department were dispatched around 8:08 p.m. to the 200 block of Main Street in Danville after reports of an intoxicated man causing a disturbance at a local restaurant. Authorities say the suspect allegedly behaved inappropriately toward a woman before leaving the business. Police identified the suspect as 25-year-old Richard Omar Morales of Sharpsburg. Investigators say Morales fled the area in a white 2019 GMC Denali after allegedly striking the JTI Fountain with his vehicle. Rather than stopping, authorities say he continued westbound on Memorial Drive. Officers later determined that as he traveled along the roadway, his driving became increasingly reckless, placing everyone nearby in serious danger.

According to the investigation, Morales was traveling at a high rate of speed when he passed the intersection of Primrose Drive and Memorial Drive. Detectives say he attempted to pass another vehicle on the right side, a maneuver that caused him to strike a guardrail. That impact reportedly caused him to lose control of the pickup truck. Within seconds, the vehicle crossed into the eastbound lanes, directly into the path of oncoming traffic, leaving little opportunity for anyone to react.

In the opposite lane was Brandon Lovelace Martin of Clover, Virginia, driving a 2013 Kia Optima. Investigators say the GMC crossed fully into Brandon’s lane and collided head-on with his vehicle. The impact was catastrophic. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but Brandon suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead.
