Union Parish Two-Vehicle Crash Claims Life of 33-Year-Old Deairio Loggins
Deairio Loggins, 33, of Bernice, died May 1 in two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 15 near Farmerville after overcorrecting into oncoming traffic
Deairio Loggins, 33, of Bernice, Louisiana, was killed Friday morning in a two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 15 in Union Parish, according to Louisiana State Police Troop F. The fatal collision occurred shortly after 11:00 a.m. on May 1, 2026, just north of Louisiana Highway 549 near Farmerville, claiming the life of a driver described by family and friends as vibrant and deeply loved.
Investigators said Loggins was driving a 2012 Nissan Altima southbound on LA 15 when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway. Troopers said Loggins attempted to regain control by steering left, but overcorrected, causing the Nissan to cross over the southbound lane and enter the northbound lane directly into the path of oncoming traffic.
At the same time, a 2021 Chevrolet Blazer was traveling northbound on LA 15. As the Nissan crossed the centerline, the Chevrolet struck it in the northbound lane. The impact was severe, leaving both vehicles with extensive damage and blocking the highway while emergency crews from Union Parish responded to the scene.
Loggins, who was unrestrained at the time of the crash, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding authorities. The driver of the Chevrolet, who was properly restrained, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment, troopers said.
State police emphasized that the crash remains under active investigation, with troopers working to determine why the Nissan left the roadway initially. Factors such as distraction, fatigue, speed, a possible medical episode, or roadway conditions are typically examined in such cases, though no cause has been confirmed and routine toxicology testing is pending as part of the investigation.
The crash underscores the critical importance of seat belt use, troopers noted. Louisiana law requires all occupants to be properly restrained, and state police said that unrestrained occupants face a significantly higher risk of fatal injury in crossover and head-on collisions, where crash forces are particularly violent and survival space is greatly reduced.
The loss has left the Bernice community in mourning, with friends and family remembering Loggins for his personality, his connections to Union Parish, and the void created by his passing. Community members have shared condolences online, offering prayers and support to his family as they navigate funeral arrangements and the difficult days ahead.
Louisiana State Police Troop F continues to investigate the fatal crash and asks anyone who witnessed the collision on LA 15 north of LA 549 around 11 a.m. Friday to contact investigators. Troopers also remind all drivers to stay alert, avoid distractions, wear seat belts on every trip, and to steer gently and reduce speed if a vehicle leaves the roadway to avoid overcorrection, which can lead to tragic crossover crashes like the one that took Deairio Loggins' life.
